Ritterhude, Germany  ·  On-site

Reports to: Site Manager (disciplinary) / HSE Lead Europe (functional)

The Role

You’ll take ownership of all occupational safety, health and environmental protection (HSE) at the site – and keep making it better. The goal: implement legal requirements and company standards consistently, spot and reduce risk in the production environment before it bites, and build a sustainable HSE culture that protects our people, equipment and the environment while keeping the operation safe, compliant and efficient.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop, implement and monitor occupational safety concepts in line with legal requirements (Occupational Safety Act, Industrial Safety Regulation, DGUV) – running risk assessments, safety inspections, and accident and near-miss analysis.
  • Organise and deliver safety training and instruction for employees.
  • Ensure environmental compliance (Federal Immission Control Act, Circular Economy Act), and monitor and optimise waste, emissions, energy and resource use – including compliant disposal of plastic waste and chemicals with external providers.
  • Build, maintain and continuously develop an integrated HSE management system (ISO 14001, ISO 45001), running internal audits and supporting external ones.
  • Prepare HSE reports and KPIs, and report regularly to management.
  • Advise plant management and specialist departments on all safety, environmental and health matters – working closely with Production, Maintenance, Quality and HR, and liaising with authorities, associations and service providers.
  • Support crisis and emergency management – emergency and alarm plans, drills (evacuation, fire-fighting), and acting as point of contact for safety or environmental incidents.

What You’ll Bring

  • A completed degree in a relevant field (Safety Engineering, Environmental Technology, Process Engineering, Plastics Technology, Chemical Engineering or Occupational Safety) – or a technician / master craftsman qualification with relevant HSE training.
  • Certified Safety Specialist (SiFa, per §6 ASiG) – mandatory.
  • Several years’ HSE experience, ideally in a plastics or chemical production environment, with HSE management systems and audits.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation and standards (Occupational Safety Act, Industrial Safety Regulation, Federal Immission Control Act, Hazardous Substances Ordinance).
  • Business-fluent German (essential); good English (an advantage for international audits and documentation).
  • Good IT skills (MS Office, ideally HSE-specific software).

Advantageous

  • Additional qualifications such as Fire Safety Officer, Hazardous Substances Officer, Environmental Protection Officer or Waste Management Officer.
  • ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 training, or internal HSE auditor training.

Personal Profile

  • Analytical and process-oriented, with a high sense of responsibility and initiative.
  • Assertive and confident, with strong communication skills at every level – from the production floor to management.
  • A natural at training and raising safety awareness among employees.
